Derwent Trekkers blog

Since I last entered news etc. I have taken to using walking poles to help me to keep up with the gang. For this reason, I have been unable to take any photographs. Need for hands

to be free. Just possible that others may send some.

Have to wait and see.

My return Trekkers Blog 5th July 2015

Finding that I cannot do some of the things that I used to do on the Derwent Trekkers site, I have decided to resurrect it. It may not work out, but it is worth a try.
The first obstacle overcome. I have been having problems with photos.
And the second.
Try to add it to Blogger next.
Success. Will improve with use.

The Trekkers sprang a surprise on me on my birthday with this magnificent cake. Cut up and devoured on the spot.

News item 27th Jan 2015

Update on Sid and Shirley.

The email message below gives us the picture. New Zealand does not seem to suit Sid.
This is the second time he has had a health problem there.
JohnS.

Hi John,   Sorry about the lack of chat, I've been in hospital, having a rogue gall stone removed, for the last six weeks I've been in agony on a daily basis because of it, eventually I went to hospital and they set too finding the culprit! There is no wifi in the hospitals here, everyone uses their phone networks, so I was unable to email as I don't have a smart phone!
Anyway I'm back at Shirley's daughters place now and am ordered to rest! I'm not complaining, sitting here in the sun! Sorry it's probably near freezing where you are, 26c here! Nice! We have had to rearrange all our return flights, so now we are due back on Feb 25th, gives me a chance to put back some of the weight I have lost.
Hope you are both well, take care, see you soon,    Sid.  and.  Shirley

Derwent Trekkers note book 23rd January 2015

Derwent Trekkers walk 23rd January 2015.
Todays walk attracted 23 walkers.
Darley Park Drive. Lead by Richard.

Darley Grove. Backmarked by Brenda, supported by Merle.

Thanks to Richard for leading today's walk from Ferrers Way / Finningley Drive via
Broadway to St Mary's church, city centre, and thanks to Brenda for being back marker.

Ferrers Way to St Mary's church  3.0km   1.9 miles  50 minutes
The full distance from Ferrers Way to the pickup on Corporation Street depends
on walkers' choice of cafe.  I have assumed 3.7km   2.3 miles  60 minutes.
There were 23 walkers.

Map attached with the walk route marked in orange.  Basemap is the Derby cycling
map hence the unusual road colours and cycle route numbers.  Also attached are
two photos, 5929 taken on Darley Park Drive and 5931 on Darley Grove alongside a
length of wall that is starting to bulge

Great Northern walk at Mickleover. 15th Jan 2015

Today's walk started in Mickleover.
The walk commenced in Mickleover by Weavers Green. Somewhere that I had not been before.
Distance appx 2miles with refreshment being taken at The Great Northern public house.
Unfortunately, I had not set my GPS up, and therefore did not get an exact trace. From previous traces when we have done the Greenway part of this walk, it has been just under two miles. The short section by Weavers Green would add about .25 miles.

Onto a footpath that led to The Great Northern Greenway and to Radbourne.

 On the Greenway.
Workmen clearing the overgrowth from a drainage ditch at the side of the Greenway.
And a batch of photos from Mike, for which I am grateful.
These are taken at The Great Northern pub, showing our presentation to Ron, our coach driver. This was his last run prior to his retirement. He has done us proud, without a grumble, even when we have had him driving into some very difficult places.

Brenda SHAW

25th December 2014

It is with great regret, that I have to tell you, that one of our very early walkers
has died. Ken and Brenda have not walked with us for some time, mainly due to
Brenda's ill health. Brenda passed away in hospital recently. This news is only
what I have been told, and I am unsure of any details, but will enter any thing more
that I hear, in this blog. Condolences to Ken. (Father Christmas) Ken always wore a
Santa hat at our Christmas dinners.

In this photo, Brenda is at the rear, and Ken is third from the right.
Update :- 26th December 2014. Ken's and Brenda's daughter rang me today. All the details regarding Brenda will be in tomorrows edition of the Derby Telegraph.

29th December 2014.
Death announcement in the Derby Telegraph indicates that the funeral will take place  on January 12th 2015 at 15.00 hrs at Markeaton Crematorium Round Chapel.

Update 12th January 2015.
Having attended the cremation ceremony at Markeaton on a very wet afternoon, I was surprised to see how many persons were there. Lots of people were standing in the rather small chapel. Ken and Brenda's daughter gave a detailed rundown on Brenda's life. The Trekkers were represented by our Chairperson, John Ollerenshaw and Sue his wife. Also in attendance were John and Janet Swan, of the Trekkers walking group. A young lady made herself known to us. It seems that she has been following our Blog and leaned about the funeral from this blog.

Trekkers Christmas meal at New Inn Little Eaton

The Trekkers Christmas gathering 11th December 2014.

Most of the regular walkers attended the Annual Christmas dinner at The New Inn
in Little Eaton. Several members who are no longer able to walk with us also attended.

Rear view of Chuck. With the ladies, as usual.

Dave and his daughter.

PeterW collecting rubbish. Very domesticated. Yvonne at the rear.
Richard and Bel, with a partial Mo. Richard looking jaunty and Bel beaming.
Ron our coach driver and his wife. Sadly, Ron is retiring in the New Year. We will miss him.
Merle is engrossed is something. Angela saying a prayer, with Janet and Hazel, joining in the prayer.
